Spring Home Tune Up

Throughout the winter your home stood tall and proud, as Mother Nature delivered freezing temperatures, ice and measurable amounts of snow. As the spring temperatures now rise, it’s time to free your home of the remnants of winter.

Give your home the TLC it deserves by following the spring and summer home care checklist below:

  • Clean out gutters and downspouts thoroughly including ground extensions.
  • Check sump pump operation and flush system with clean water.
  • Inspect air conditioning unit for proper operation, and clean exterior of the unit.
  • Examine your backsplashes, sinks, showers, tubs, base boards, window frames and doorframes for cracks in the caulking. Re-caulk as needed. Keep in mind the extreme temperature changes in Michigan require this to be done every season.
  • Look over the weather stripping on all doors and replace as needed.
  • Check windows for smooth and proper operation, adjust and/or lubricate as needed, and clean all window tracks.
  • Inspect and touch-up exterior paint, stain and caulk as needed.
  • Lubricate rollers and guides on the garage door and opener.
  • Test all ground fault circuit interrupter, or GFCI receptacles in your home.
  • When you stop using your furnace to heat your home, be sure to shut off the home humidifier until the next winter season. In addition, change the furnace filter.

Additionally, for your family’s safety, be sure to check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to be certain that the batteries are still strong and units are operational. Test each smoke detector in your home by pressing the ‘test’ button. If the sound is weak or nonexistent, replace the batteries.

With all home maintenance, it’s important to review product manufacturer recommendations. Be sure to call a professional if you are uncomfortable performing any of the above tasks.
